Shagari Reveals Why He Refused To Be Peter Obi’s Running Mate

A former deputy governor of Sokoto State, Mukhtar  Shagari has disclosed that the Labour Party (LP) had during its search for a running mate to its presidential candidate, approached him to become the party’s vice presidential candidate.

Shagari while speaking to Channels Tv, noted that he rejected the offer because he believes the Labour Party does not have the necessary Political network to win a presidential election in Nigeria.

“The Labour party contacted me and requested if I would like to be the Vice Presidential candidate to Peter Obi,”Shagari is quoted to have said.

“And I looked at the political scenario, what Labour party is, and decided that I cannot be the Vice Presidential candidate to Peter Ob”.

He added that the two dominant Political parties in Nigeria: the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) stand the best position to win the 2023 presidential election. He further stated that whereas the issue of zoning of the Presidency across the geographical zones of the federation is a relevant argument but that it is not a constitutional thing.

“It is so clear that in areas in the South-East, and young people are shouting about him on social media – yes, it’s politics.

“But the truth of the matter is that there are two dominant parties in this country – APC and PDP. If you want to become President, I think you must belong to one of them.”
