After the historic ENDSARS protest in October, 2020, there were speculation and even confrontation about the ownership of the Oriental hotel and civic center.
Some speculated that the oriental hotel and civic center were owned by the former Governor; speculation Bola Ahmed Tinubu has now clarified.
However, record shows that the “Lagos Oriental Hotel is owned by the WEMPCO Group with 99percent shareholding. The WEMPCO Group of Companies was founded by businessman and entrepreneur Mr. K.F. Tung over fifty (50) years ago.
“The Lagos Oriental Hotel is a flagship in the Nigerian hospitality business but is not a flagship of the WEMPCO Group. It is an investment made by the Group in 2008, but not part of their core manufacturing business.
In the documentary video the Governor of Lagos state said “I brought private investors to Lagos state, Oriental Hotel was a refuse dumping site and it took several months to clear it out”.
