NBC Submits Bill To Law Markers To Regulate Social media

Amid the rate of infodemic in the country, which is mostly carried out on social media, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) director-general, Balarabe Ilelah, while hosting information minister, Mohammed Idris revealed that the body has sent a bill to law makers for the regulation of social media .

Addressing the issue she stated that the body is seeking to repeal & reenact the NBC act, CAP L11 laws of the federation of Nigeria 2004, to accommodate the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting service.

Speaking further on the spread of pseudo information and low quality contents on social media, she described the ills of social media as a “monster”, which if not handled with caution, do generate unnecessary fear, tribal wars through misinforming the public.

Some of her words;

“We want to tell you that a bill for an act to repeal & amend the NBC act, CAP L11 laws of the federation of Nigeria 2004, to accommodate the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting service, also to promote quality audio & video, efficient management of the spectrum, Nigeria Broadcast Institute, social media regulation has been read for the first time on the floor of the national assembly,” She said.
