10 Dead, 26 Rescued As Governor Soludo Visit Ochanja Market After Building Collapse

It was a tragic moment for residents and business persons in Ochanja market, Onitsha, Anambra State, after an uncompleted building collapsed on Monday night around 8p.m, when some of the workers and traders were still working inside the building.

According to report not less than ten persons have been confirmed dead, while 26 others were rescued.

However, following the tragic incident, Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Tuesday, 27th February, visited the scene.

While addressing the incident, the governor pledged to get justice for the affected persons. He stated that the rescued sustained various level of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. But an eyewitnesses claimed that casualty figure is up to ten.

Soludo said:

“When investigations are completed, the developer, Chairman of the market and every other person involved in the disaster will be prosecuted and jailed.

“The remaining building under construction by the same developer, near the collapsed one will be demolished immediately after rescue operations on the site had been completed.” He said.

The Commissioner for Special Duties, Beverly Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche, while speaking on the incident, assured residents that the state government will make sure that no one that was culpable in the disaster will go unpunished.
